November 16th and 18th - Fighting for Jerusalem

posted Nov 12, 2009, 3:24 AM by Jack Cadranel
Jerusalem is a city that has been fought over and conquered many times.  The coming week's tours focus on two different eras in Jerusalem's history and two very different struggles to conquer and rebuild the city.

On Monday November 16th our tour is called Crusaders in Jerusalem.  In 1099 the Crusaders conquered Jerusalem and massacred its inhabitants. When they were finally driven out they left behind a rich architectural heritage. We'll explore some of their buildings and follow the story of the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem.
We shall meet just outside the Jaffa Gate at 1.30 pm.

The tour on Wednesday November 18th tells a story of exile and return.  It is called The Battle for the Jewish Quarter - 1948 and 1967In the 1948 War of Independence the Jewish Quarter of the Old City was under siege. Despite the valiant fight of its defenders it fell to the Arab Legion just two weeks after the establishment of the State of Israel. The fighters were taken into captivity and the rest of the residents expelled. For 19 years until its recapture by Israeli troops in the Six Day War in 1967 Jews did not set foot in the Old City.
We shall meet just outside the Zion Gate at 9.30 am.

Each tour lasts 2-3 hours and costs NIS 60 per person plus any site entry fees.  There are site entry fees of NIS 2 on Monday's tour and NIS 7 on Wednesday's tour.  Please register in advance 054-647-8955 or tourwithjack@gmail.com if you wish to join one of these tours.
